Duration: June 1999 to October 2000
The main goal of this project is to use modern virtual reality equipment (motion detection system, head-mounted display, etc.) and computer simulations to create a virtual delivery room in which a group of medical students or even doctors could perform virtual neonatal resuscitation. This presents a welcome learning and training tool in neonatal medicine.

During last year we designed a graphical interface of the virtual delivery room with all required medical instruments and the model of a newborn with simulation of its basic life signs. We implemented a network application for the control and synchronization of all happenings and events in the remote virtual worlds and the user interfaces for control of the newborn's life signs and for realization of any medical interventions. Program support for the motion detection system and system for audio communication among the visitors of the remote virtual worlds were developed as well. Furthermore, we extended the virtual delivery room with the module for the execution and automatic selection of different afterbirth scenarios, the module for saving and replaying the whole happenings in the virtual delivery room and with the possibility of adding supplementary medical interventions. The complete prototype was successfully installed at Stanford School of Medicine, Palo Alto, USA, where their medical students will test it.
